Chris Detzel (00:00)
All right, welcome to another DFW running talk. My name is Chris Denzel, and today's special guest is Kai Michelle. Kai, how are you?
Kai Michelle (00:07)
I'm well. How are you today?
Chris Detzel (00:09)
Doing well. I see that you have your sweaty and steady curvy girls run club. I love it. How fun is that?
Kai Michelle (00:16)
You it's so fun. It's we we have a ball. It's so fun.
Chris Detzel (00:19)
That's great. And you know, we're going to talk about that in a minute, I promise. But let's talk a little bit about you, Kai. so you you started a running group and we want to get into that, but I want to know more a little bit about you. Like did you when did you start running? You know, what'd you where did what'd you get interested in?
Kai Michelle (00:35)
let me see. Okay, so I've always kind of I don't want to say always, I feel like maybe adulthood is when I started like to like running. So in college, I was a part of our radio station and we used to host a 5K every year for homecoming. And that's kind of how I got introduced into a 5K, because we used to do that every year.
And then let me see, after that, the pandemic. So when the pandemic happened, of course, you know, there was no gyms, everything was closed down. And I started to, you know, try my hand in running. And I had a friend, two friends actually, Jamal and Shan. They invited me to come out and run at ZFT Dallas Run Club. And literally that's where I fell in love with running at.
Chris Detzel (01:27)
Did you play any sport let's go back a little bit. Did you play any sports
Kai Michelle (01:30)
huh.
Chris Detzel (01:31)
like in high school or anything like that or?
Kai Michelle (01:33)
So I played I played softball. I was terrible. I I sucked, okay? let's
Chris Detzel (01:35)
Mm-hmm.
Kai Michelle (01:38)
get that straight. It's not even on the you play softball, let's go play. No, get me off the field. Like, no. I was afraid of the ball. My coach used to be like, you gotta get under the I'm like, it hit me and I can't do this no more. I did want to I
Chris Detzel (01:48)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (01:51)
did want to try track and feel, but nobody nobody took me serious for real. Like that, like I play a lot. Sometimes I play too much.
But nobody really took me serious. Like, yeah, my P coach, he was like, Yeah, skates, my last name is Skates. He was like, you know, coaches call their students by their last name. But I wasn't an athlete though, so he's like, yeah, skates, I know you're lying, you don't want to be on the track team. And I was like, no, I do. Like, you know, I got here for the warm-up. I did the mile with everybody. Like, I can do shot put, but nobody really took me serious. But I was more so of a theater kid. I did all the
Chris Detzel (02:25)
I love theater.
Kai Michelle (02:26)
plays. You said what?
Chris Detzel (02:28)
I say I love theater. I was in theater in high school
Kai Michelle (02:29)
Love it.
Chris Detzel (02:30)
as well.
Kai Michelle (02:30)
Love theater. Love theater. I was in theater, did all the plays. I took guitar, really involved with student government, yearbook. So I wasn't an athlete, and I'm fine with that. Now, my family, my mom, she played softball, volleyball, my older brother played volleyball, my nephews played tennis, my mom ran track, my little sister ran track, my little brother did football, my older brother did basketball as well, but me.
Not the athlete, not the athlete kid, no, at all.
Chris Detzel (02:59)
That's funny. Do you still play guitar?
Kai Michelle (03:01)
no, I stopped and I need to pick it back up because you know, when you don't use it, you lose it. But I feel like I can still tune an acuse acoustic guitar. So I took guitar so so random. and I used to play it with like long nails too. So I don't know, I haven't picked up a guitar in so long. I can't even believe I said that. I haven't even s talked about guitars in so long, but yeah.
Chris Detzel (03:23)
Sound like you still have sort of a passion. It's in the back of your brain a little bit.
Kai Michelle (03:26)
You know, it's but
well, I'm I'm a really big fan of Prince. So I really feel like that
Chris Detzel (03:30)
Hmm. Yeah.
Kai Michelle (03:31)
was like tied into like my love and like appreciation for guitars, guitar solos and stuff. So yeah, it's some passion there definitely.
Chris Detzel (03:39)
And you said where'd you go to college?
Kai Michelle (03:41)
I went to Wiley College. It is an HBCU in East Texas. So when I graduated high school in 2012, my mom and my stepdad, we packed up our truck and they drove me 20, 22 hours from LA
Chris Detzel (03:55)
Okay.
Kai Michelle (03:55)
all the way to East Texas to Little Country town called Marshall, Texas. And
Chris Detzel (04:00)
yeah.
Kai Michelle (04:01)
yeah, got my degree, had a blast in college, pledged the most amazing sorority, Sigma Gamma Sorority Incorporated.
super involved on campus. I love my HBCU so much. I go back every year for homecoming. Created
Chris Detzel (04:16)
It's awesome.
Kai Michelle (04:16)
life, lifelong friends and family in my college and even in the city that Wiley College is at. And it's now Wiley University. But when I was there, it was Wiley College. So it's still hard for me to get that verbiage out of my mind. But I am a proud HBCU graduate of Wiley College.
Chris Detzel (04:34)
Great, what did you get your major in this?
Kai Michelle (04:35)
I majored in mass communications and media studies. Yes. So
Chris Detzel (04:38)
Okay, nice.
Kai Michelle (04:39)
I was a mass com major. originally I thought I was gonna graduate college and go off to be a talk show host. So like that was my thing. I'm gonna be a talk show host, I'm gonna be talk show host.
Chris Detzel (04:49)
He did radio.
Kai Michelle (04:50)
I did radio, yes. And I was
Chris Detzel (04:52)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (04:52)
like, I'm that's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna have my own syndicated talk show. This is what I'm gonna do.
Then of course, like over time, I started like really thinking like, what can I do with my major? So like I dabbled in radio for a little bit. My first job out of college was KSLA News 12. I was like, okay, well, maybe I can try like the news anchor type thing. I even went to Yes.
Chris Detzel (05:14)
So serious.
Kai Michelle (05:15)
I even went to DC. I was a part of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation where I got to intern on the hill. Like I lived in DC for like six months.
And I interned on the hill. I was in Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee's office. She was the Congresswoman in Houston, Texas. She's now passed away. But I had an awesome time out there. And I was still thinking, like in my head, hey, I'm gonna work in some type of media and work my way over into having my own talk show. So then when I was out there, I was trying to find ways to kind of like work.
for CNN, like, you know, get in there, like, maybe I can become a political commentator. I'm like, I'm I'm sassy, I'm quick, you know, I like to read,
Chris Detzel (05:56)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (05:57)
like to watch the news, you know, listen to radio. I've been doing it, you know, through my whole college
Chris Detzel (06:02)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (06:02)
career, why not?
Chris Detzel (06:03)
Why not? And so what'd you decide to do? We'll get into running
Kai Michelle (06:07)
So
Chris Detzel (06:07)
in a minute. I'm just so curious now. Sorry.
Kai Michelle (06:10)
No, no, no, no, you're fine. So after trying to really find where my career was, I just dabbled here, dabbled there. I'm like, man, like what really is my purpose? but I always blogged and I always, I guess, created content, you can say. for
Chris Detzel (06:27)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (06:27)
me at the time, it was just posting photos. Like, I like my outfit, I'm gonna post it. If the people think it's cute, they'll like it. If not, well. But my
Chris Detzel (06:35)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (06:36)
following always
grew like I always had a lot of followers. I always got a lot of comments and a lot of likes on stuff. And one day this random lady reaches out to me and wants to send me like a whole bunch of clothes in exchange for me to like take pictures in them and she was gonna pay me. And I was like, sure. And you know right
Chris Detzel (06:55)
Shooting.
Kai Michelle (06:57)
I I'm fresh out of college. So I was like, okay, cool. So I did that and those opportunities started coming time after time. And around
Let me see, around 2022 is when I decided to quit my full-time job. So at the time, look, I've lived a lot of lives, okay? But at the time I was working for Diddon County Public Health and I was the HIV outreach coordinator. So I was the one that would coordinate events around people getting education and and safety and testing and all those natures and
really speaking knowledge and information to the the counties, the the school districts, even in workspaces, about, you know, just how to say stay safe, how to be protected. I thoroughly enjoyed that work, seriously. but, you know, I am such a creative and I'm like always everywhere. That's when my content started to take off as well in 2022.
So that's when I decided to quit my full-time job and become a full-time influencer. And at the time I was really only shooting content for fashion, clothes, and then eventually I went ahead and brought in makeup and beauty, a little bit of lifestyle here, a little bit of foodie there. And yeah, I've been creating content
Chris Detzel (08:18)
So awesome.
Kai Michelle (08:19)
full-time since 2022. I have my own.
business, my own LLC that houses all the contracts and negotiations
Chris Detzel (08:26)
Mm-hmm.
Kai Michelle (08:28)
and things like that. And then it always makes me think back to when I was in high school. I had a teacher and she was speaking to us and she was telling us like a lot of you guys are going to go off and you're going to find careers that are out there that are already, you know, set. And then there are a few of you in this class that are going to go out there and you're going to create your own career path.
And you know, you're young, you're in high school, hey, I'm about to graduate a senior year, you know, you thinking about whatever. I'm thinking about brom. I didn't
Chris Detzel (08:54)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (08:54)
think that I would be that person that went out there and created her own career path. And that's exactly what I did.
Chris Detzel (09:00)
Well, that's that's an amazing path. And and I think that, you know, y you lived a few lives like you said, and kind of morphed into what you are today, you know, and what you've done today, and that's pretty remarkable. I love it. You know, and sometimes, you know, you never know where it's gonna take you. I mean and you took a chance and it's pretty cool. Well let's talk a little bit about running. So
Kai Michelle (09:20)
Yes, let's get into the running.
Chris Detzel (09:23)
so you said you you were doing the radio stuff and you
Kinda talked about a five K and then, you know, you I guess you ran a five K, is that kind of how that worked worked?
Kai Michelle (09:32)
Yeah.
I I r I ran it I ran a 5k there. I remember when I graduated college, I s had got my first apartment in the the town that my college was in. So of course you know when everybody graduates they go home, but like I had my first apartment, so I stayed. And like, you know, my friends aren't here anymore because everybody's graduated and they're home for the summer. So I was trying to find things to do. And I remember finding
A random 5K in the next city over. And I think it was like a donut dash in Shreveport, Louisiana. And I drove out there and ran the 5K. And I was like, this was really fun. It was something I did by myself. And then I ended up doing a color run in Tyler, Texas. Again,
Chris Detzel (10:14)
I've done those before.
Kai Michelle (10:15)
really not putting two and two together about the mechanics of running, nothing about running shoes, nothing about training, timing, pace. Didn't know anything. I just knew that.
I was bored and the first
Chris Detzel (10:29)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (10:29)
5K that I went to was really fun. So let me try it again. and that was something I also did when I was in DC and I was interning out there. Like, of course, I have my co cohort. However, I was like, I seen a 5K and I was like, I like doing those. Let me sign up for
Chris Detzel (10:44)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (10:44)
this. Like, and just just did it. So it was some it's something that I have always did, but didn't really know for real.
Chris Detzel (10:53)
Yeah.
Yeah. And so when you did your first one where you die and were like, my gosh, I had fun, but it's really hard.
Kai Michelle (11:00)
I I know that I ran, walked as much as I could, like I would run and then I would stop.
Chris Detzel (11:06)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (11:07)
yeah, I finished. You know, I I got I
Chris Detzel (11:08)
Yeah, it's okay.
Kai Michelle (11:09)
got those medals for sure. but yeah, I went out there with no prior knowledge about running at all.
Chris Detzel (11:16)
Yeah.
That's that's awesome. That's a good start. Did you have you really kind of started like did you get into when did you kinda really get into it? Was it did did you move here or what was kind of the
Kai Michelle (11:27)
Yes.
So I got into I got into running when I moved to Dallas. So it's it's funny. So like I feel like it's like a two two part or whatever. So again, going
Chris Detzel (11:37)
Let's go.
Kai Michelle (11:37)
back to like fresh out of college, still trying to find what career really sticks for me, right? So I ended up talking to like a Navy recruiter and they were like, Yeah, of course, you know, you're out of college, come on into the Navy, but you know, you have to have a certain pace to get in. And I
That's when I started like understanding like timing when it came to running. And I
Chris Detzel (11:59)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (11:59)
was like, yeah, I'm gonna go to the Navy and I'm gonna, I'm gonna run so I can so I can get in. Cause at that time I was like a little I was a little scared because I'm like, I I can't run was it like a 13-minute mile, 12-minute mile? I'm like, I don't know if I could run that. So I started running by a lake by my old apartment building. But then after a while, I was like, yeah, yeah. But anyway, so
Chris Detzel (12:22)
Forget
about it.
Kai Michelle (12:23)
Not I'm not going. nothing bad. I was just like, be for real, Kai, you just graduated college. You don't have to have everything figured out right now. You can enjoy life
Chris Detzel (12:31)
Four percent.
Kai Michelle (12:32)
in your your twenties, you know? So anyway, the pandemic happened. And like I said, my friend Jamal and Shan invited me to come out to ZFT. And it was the first time I experienced a run club here in Dallas, Texas, or just overall. and then just to see so many millennials out there running like
We're coming out of a pandemic, like we can we can meet up and we're outside and it's so many of us. And that those moments right there from ZFT Dallas, all of my friends that I have to this day, like we've celebrated what five and six birthdays together. We know each other's
Chris Detzel (13:09)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (13:10)
family. we've traveled together, we've watched each other run our first halves, our first full marathons. We've been able to just be in support of each other.
But that is how I got introduced to running was through ZFT Run Club Dallas.
Chris Detzel (13:26)
Z F T Dallas w was huge. I mean it was like
Kai Michelle (13:29)
Yes.
We ha we used to have a time, you know. It was really, really big, beautiful, beautiful.
Chris Detzel (13:35)
Yeah, yeah, I I was talking to I forgot her name, at this five kit you were at last week. and or was it it wasn't even a week ago, maybe it was. But anyways, I was talking to her and she was like, Yeah, ZFT kind of just folded a little bit and then kind of
Kai Michelle (13:48)
Mm.
Chris Detzel (13:48)
went other directions and then some other run clubs started from from that already. So, you know, when there's one one run club that folds, there's others that that come. So
Kai Michelle (13:59)
You know,
just like just like anything in life, right? Like things have their ups and their downs, but everything keeps going, right? So
Chris Detzel (14:08)
That's right.
Kai Michelle (14:09)
it's like going to your favorite restaurant all the time, but they start losing business because seasons change, people move,
Chris Detzel (14:15)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (14:15)
the same people are frequenting it. So the culture of it shifts a little bit. But then another restaurant opens and then everybody gets to try this restaurant and it's so good. Maybe this one will stay longer, but you know.
Chris Detzel (14:27)
Like that.
Kai Michelle (14:27)
Just some things just start and some things fall.
Chris Detzel (14:30)
I mean, I think the run clubs are all you know, I've been doing this for a long time and I I know that either, you know, if run clubs keep going, people come and go, you know. And you know, just trying to keep it going is hard because one, I think you need a good leader at all times, one way or another. Two is if that leader leaves, then if there's not a kind of a person to take that role on, it's it's really hard to kind of keep it going, you know, and and
Kai Michelle (14:55)
Hmm, hmm.
Chris Detzel (14:55)
so
People either go to another club or start their own clubs and so you're right. I mean it's just another restaurant. Somebody starts up and go to it and enjoy it. So
Kai Michelle (15:04)
Yeah, you know,
you lose your regular customers when they they move to a different city, has a new job, or
Chris Detzel (15:10)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (15:10)
life changes, or you know, running takes a toll on our bodies too. So after doing it for so long, marathon after marathon, half after half, sometimes like you know, the regular customers gotta take a a break from from the regular menus and change some stuff up.
Chris Detzel (15:27)
Exactly. No, it's it that's exactly what happens. and you know, that's just that's just alive. So you ran with ZFT, you made some really great relationships and things, and you know, you said you ran some halves and folds.
Kai Michelle (15:39)
no, I didn't run my first half marathon until last year. Yes. I did great. I ran BMW half marathon. I did amazing. What do mean? I trained.
Chris Detzel (15:43)
Warling, how'd you do? What'd you think? Awesome. Of course you did.
Kai Michelle (15:53)
I trained for BMW half marathon. And I was super excited because I'm like, I want to do this before my 32nd birthday. I've always wanted to run BMW half marathon because so many of my other run friends have.
run BMW half, BMW full. I've been out there cheering them on, coming coming past mile seven, mile eight, mile nine. Like I've been out there like three years in a row and I'm like, I'm gonna run it. I'm gonna run it. Ooh, but I'm scared. But last year I was like, yeah, no, you're done being scared. It's time to run your first official half marathon. So I trained for it. I got a run coach for it. I got really serious.
Chris Detzel (16:33)
Nice.
Kai Michelle (16:33)
I started understanding
running shoes and support and and pace and heart rate and all those things. And I I vlog the the whole my whole thing. Like, you know, week one, week two, week ten, you know, week fifteen. I'm running my lungs now 14 miles today, six
Chris Detzel (16:52)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (16:52)
miles on a random Wednesday. Like Brandon Bowie. I'm not sure if you know Brandon Bowie. Great, awesome runner, amazing run coach. I love
Everything that he does, and I try my best to stick to his plan. because I'm training again for BMW half. I want to PR my last half marathon, but yeah, try my best to stick to his plan. Brandon, if you're listening, I'm sorry if I was lacking on the miles, I've been busy, but yes,
Chris Detzel (17:20)
It happens.
Kai Michelle (17:21)
it happens, but
Chris Detzel (17:22)
And you get time.
Kai Michelle (17:24)
yeah, you know, I still got still got a little bit of time.
But yeah, BMW Have Marathon was my first. I trained, I vlogged about it, and I kind of went between posting it on like Instagram and TikTok. And
Chris Detzel (17:35)
Mm-hmm.
Kai Michelle (17:35)
somehow my running journey picked up traction because I created a series and it was called Curvy Girl Running Chronicles. So every time I posted, it was another episode, like four miles today. I thought run eight miles for the first time. You
Chris Detzel (17:47)
I love it. It's so catchy too. I love it.
Kai Michelle (17:51)
know, yeah, Curvy Girl Running Chronicles.
Chris Detzel (17:53)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (17:53)
And it started
to pick up a lot of traction. So with me posting it, I started to have a lot of people like you know messaging me, telling me that I inspired them to get out there and start running. They're tagging me in posts, they're asking me questions. And in the back of my mind, I'm like, I'm a beginner. So I'm responding like, hey, I just started doing this, but this is what worked
Chris Detzel (18:13)
Yeah. Yeah.
Kai Michelle (18:16)
for me. This is what I use. I use this app. I
wear this sports bra. These are the type of socks I wear. I like these shoes. I didn't like these shoes. And I started giving advice like through DMs and stuff because of that.
Chris Detzel (18:29)
pretty cool when you so was that kind of the first time you really started vlogging about running or just kind
of in a consistent yeah because I mean
Kai Michelle (18:35)
Yes. Yes. Yes.
Chris Detzel (18:38)
you think your audience probably wasn't runners but then when you started doing the running stuff all of a sudden you know they were inspired by what you're doing on a consistent basis and that's awesome you know
Kai Michelle (18:50)
Yes,
yes. And I feel like especially me as a a content creator and influencer, it's really important that we know, I don't wanna say just know, know our community, build with our audience. the people that follow us, follow us for a reason. Like it's like going to your favorite channel to watch your favorite show. You know you can go to the Food Network because you're gonna see something about food. You know you can
Turn on Comedy Central back in the day to get a good laugh, you know? So you follow people because it's something that they're providing that you like to watch. so bringing my followers along with me with my journey on my journey to run my first half marathon or just running overall, they thoroughly enjoyed it. And it did spark a lot of inspiration, but it also brought in new community members and you know, friends that always wanted to try their hand at it.
ended up trying their hand at it and loving it as well. So it's like I built community inside of my community, as a creator, as a woman and as a runner.
Chris Detzel (19:49)
Yeah. I like that. What and and I'm gonna get you thinking a little bit, you know, what's kinda your one of your favorite stories, one of many I'm sure, about maybe the running community or something, you know, that you did with others from a running standpoint or you know
Kai Michelle (20:03)
So many highlights. my God. You said one. I know. That's why I'm like I know. Okay, well
Chris Detzel (20:05)
I just want one, Kai. I just want one. Yeah, so many. Or two.
Kai Michelle (20:12)
you you gotta narrow it down a little bit, like like like like with
Chris Detzel (20:15)
All right,
let's say you went on a a running trip. You know, is there a trip that comes to mind or
Kai Michelle (20:20)
yeah, let's talk about let's
talk about Strava. Okay. Yes.
Chris Detzel (20:24)
let's do it.
Kai Michelle (20:26)
So with training for my half marathon last year, posted my content. Strava ended up coming to Dallas as well. And I ended
Chris Detzel (20:33)
well.
Kai Michelle (20:34)
up you know, meeting one of their team members. And I don't know if somehow I got into the algorithm or not, but one day I'm out running a little four miles in Cedar Hill, and I look at my Apple Watch and
It had said, You're invited to New York City Marathon with Strata and like I stopped 'cause I was like, Wait, I'm not running a marathon. Hold on, what's going on?
Chris Detzel (20:56)
Exactly.
Happened in New York.
Kai Michelle (20:58)
Like, I'm like, okay, wait, this is this is flattering. This is cute, but a marathon, well, not yet. I I do want to, I'm running one actually, every woman's marathon. But at that time, I got so nervous, I thought I thought I was gonna pass out. Anyway, looked at my watch, opened it, and I was like, my gosh. I got invited to come to New York during New York City Marathon weekend.
to run the 5k the day before it's called the Abbott Dash to the finish line. So like basically like a shakeout run in a sense. But it
Chris Detzel (21:30)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (21:30)
was really cool, it was really fun. and that's where I feel like I got to see in real time the intersection of me being a influencer and a runner come into a real intersection and it worked. Cause I was able to do a brand deal, which is something that I've been doing
With my business of being an influencer
Chris Detzel (21:49)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (21:50)
free since twenty twenty two, but also as a runner, and I get to bring my audience on another journey with me while I'm already in another journey. So I'm giving them this content, I'm giving them these storylines. So that is
Chris Detzel (22:03)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (22:04)
definitely a favorite memory. it made me just understand Strava even more. I love Strava. I root for
Chris Detzel (22:10)
Yeah, me too.
Kai Michelle (22:11)
it all the time. And being out there inner
introduced to so many other runners and run creators and run club founders and we're all just together. We did a shakeout run together and Strava had breakfast for us and they gave us these really cute
Chris Detzel (22:27)
Okay.
Kai Michelle (22:28)
custom duffel bags and t-shirts and sweaters. It was just super great. And I was
Chris Detzel (22:33)
Mm-hmm. Not cool swag.
Kai Michelle (22:35)
just like I love the run community. And that was also my first experience into going and running out of state.
Like it was my first time running in New York and I got to run with Strava, Team Strava.
Chris Detzel (22:48)
That's pretty cool. That's really cool. See, I knew I could get a story out of you. I mean everybody knows who Strava is, you know. So
Kai Michelle (22:53)
It was great. It was great. You know, everybody
knows Strava. If you're a runner, you know Strava, you know? So I feel like and that's
Chris Detzel (23:00)
That's right.
Kai Michelle (23:01)
like a for me, it's that's like a little a a brag for me, you know. I ran with Strava. I love Strava, I'm
Chris Detzel (23:07)
What you
Kai Michelle (23:08)
verified on Strava, yeah. You know, so
Chris Detzel (23:11)
What's your sh what's your Strava
where people can follow you on Strava?
Kai Michelle (23:14)
Michelle, my my name just like on Instagram, but just Cod Michelle
Chris Detzel (23:16)
Yeah, Michelle. Okay. Same.
Kai Michelle (23:18)
instead of the MS in front of it. But yeah, go follow me on Strava. yeah, you'll see that was lacking with my mouth this week. But don't talk about me, y'all. Don't talk about me.
Chris Detzel (23:27)
Where's the miles?
Kai Michelle (23:28)
Well, right, like where's her
mouse at this week? She ran last week, but not this week. No. Yeah.
Chris Detzel (23:34)
You'll get back at it. and
you said you have a half marathon coming up, Dallas half. Is that is that right? Is that your next? Okay.
Kai Michelle (23:39)
Yes. my next
one, yeah, BMW Half Marathon Weekend. Super excited for that one because I have encouraged a lot of friends to run their first half or first 10k. So yeah, I'm gonna have a lot of my girls from my run club are signed up. So our pink and orange is gonna be out there. And then soon as I come out of well actually it's gonna go like this. I know we're talking about running, but I'm doing high rocks in November.
Then I'm doing
Chris Detzel (24:06)
well.
Kai Michelle (24:07)
MW half in December. Then I'm doing every woman's marathon in February. I'm sitting down
Chris Detzel (24:13)
Rap rope.
Kai Michelle (24:13)
in March. I'm sitting down in March.
Chris Detzel (24:16)
You're gonna be busy. And so let's talk we'll talk about some of those in a minute, but let's talk about the the sweaty and steady Kirby Girls Running Club.
Kai Michelle (24:23)
Yes, let's talk about my girls, my heart. Yes. Yes, what do you want to
Chris Detzel (24:27)
How'd you
Kai Michelle (24:28)
dust?
Chris Detzel (24:28)
w I wanna know like how'd you start? What what was the thinking around that? What's when you know,
Kai Michelle (24:33)
Okay. Yes.
Chris Detzel (24:34)
all that kind of stuff?
Kai Michelle (24:35)
Yes. Okay. So kind of like I was telling you before, running, posting it online, a lot of people messaging me, wanting to know, they're tagging me and post. So in my mind, I'm like, everybody's asking me this stuff. I'm a creator. I created a fifty mile challenge. because a lot of people were beginners, slow runners. And I'm like, Okay, let me create a challenge. I I already have some run friends and
I'm gonna create this challenge. I'm gonna allow people to enter the challenge. I'm going to put it on Instagram. Everybody can join it and post their miles instead of like posting because my story was getting long. And I'm like, I need to house this over here because it's
Chris Detzel (25:16)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (25:16)
kind of like going into my content. And I'm a content creator. Like I have, you know, stuff I actually have to post that like, you know, I don't want to be missed because my story is so long. So I created the sweaty and steady 50 mile challenge.
So I started doing this 50 mile challenge and everybody was welcome, right? But
Chris Detzel (25:35)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (25:36)
there was a few things that I noticed that that I didn't like. And when I don't like something, you know, I change it. So what I didn't like was like the overcompetitiveness that was happening with the 50 mile challenge. I feel like some people were just coming in and they're like, a 50 mile challenge vent. And they will come in and they will run these amazing miles, right? I love it.
But at the same time, I created this challenge for people who haven't who've never run. They they're not runners. Like I don't want them to feel intimidated. I don't want them to feel like, my God, I I should have done 25 miles in one week. Like, no, you're you're new to this. It's your your pace. I I kept emphasizing that. So with that being said, I ended up closing off sweaty and steady 50 mile challenge to be woman only.
Chris Detzel (26:27)
Hmm. Makes sense.
Kai Michelle (26:28)
And when it became woman only,
more women started to join in and ask more questions. And then we started to kind of build a deeper connection where we're able to talk about more things. And then as we grew, I started getting asked a lot, when are we gonna meet up? When are we gonna meet up? Are we ever gonna meet up? And I'm like, I'm like, no,
Chris Detzel (26:52)
I don't meet up.
Kai Michelle (26:52)
I'm like, no, I
I didn't start off with this idea like that. I'm like, I'm a very busy girl. I run a business. I have life going on. I I can't run a I can't run a run club, right? But
Chris Detzel (27:05)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (27:05)
kept praying on it. And I felt like God kept trying to make me see at that time, like, hey, you you know you have the gift of influence. I've blessed you with the gift of influence. who are you not to curate community, knowing that you can? Who are you?
not to continue to encourage people, knowing that you can. You know, you you do that without speaking, but a space is needed, don't you think? this is me talking. God didn't really just say that to me, but that's what I felt. So I had my my friends
Chris Detzel (27:34)
For the best ideas start. I love it.
Kai Michelle (27:36)
and I kept talking about it with my friends and, you know, a few friends that actually have run clubs and pick in their brain like, hey, what about this? What do you think? And it was always a hundred percent encouragement. Kai, go for it.
It's needed. It's okay to have a space for a specific group of people because it is needed. You know, you you advocate for the people, you speak for the people, you push the people in a positive, loving way. Go for it. And I'm like, I don't know. Like, I don't, I'm, I'm afraid of this happening. Like, what if this goes wrong? And everybody's rebuttal was always like, well, what if it doesn't? And I'm just like, my God. I'm like, well, I don't have help. Like, I can't run a c run club without help.
Man, I tell you, I started having people contact me. What do you need? Hey, I can make you shirts. Do you need logos printed? is there paperwork that I can do? I can make a poster. I can bring a cooler, I can bring bananas, I can bring water. And it was literally like everything that I
Chris Detzel (28:33)
That's cool.
Kai Michelle (28:33)
thought of that I couldn't that not saying I couldn't do, but everything I thought of that like would scramble my brain within the next breath, it was happening.
So I knew that it was like divine timing, it was alignment, right? and then just continuing to keep sweaty and steady as a curvy girl run club. I kind of went back and forth in my head on what I wanted the name to be. But being a slow runner myself, which is a beautiful thing, we all hang out in the back of the pack, we all run together. And it was also things that went into this, like going to like long run Saturdays.
and being the only slow runner out there. And you know, some of these parks in Dallas are really dark. So coming together with a lot of the women who are also slow runners. And I remember telling telling them one day, like, I'm gonna put something together for the slow runners so we can meet up at the park and we can run. Cause even with meeting up with other runners, it's no ill intent. They're not shading us, they're not purposely leaving us behind. But if they're a seven minute, eight minute, nine minute pacer and I'm 14 minutes like.
Who are you to wait for me when you're training for the same thing that I'm training for, right? So I just knew that a space needed to be created. And yeah, thus sweaty and steady Kirby Girl Run Club was born.
Chris Detzel (29:49)
I think I think it's a very good point because, you know, when you bring in a community of runners and say, it's for everybody, I'm not saying it's not for everybody, but it is very difficult to build relationships with, you know, people from a seven minute mile to people that are 14 minute mile. Not to say you can't all get together afterwards, have a party or, you know, whatever or have fun and talk, but but I do think that's that's important because like you know, you can't be everything for everyone.
You know, I think that's just probably true, you know, and
Kai Michelle (30:18)
Correct. Yeah.
Chris Detzel (30:21)
that's why we have so many types of different in in this case running clubs. And I love that you started that. I mean, that's it's a very good niche of people, one that maybe have been running for a while that just don't run extremely fast. Two, certainly people that are just starting, you know, and want to get in shape and and if they want to train and get better and all those kinds of things, like you're already
getting better, you've you go on your second half, you're gonna do a full, you're doing high rocks. I mean, you know, there's a lot of stuff
that's bringing you to, you know. Yeah, keeps going though. I mean, that's great.
Kai Michelle (30:51)
It just doesn't stop. It just keeps going. Yeah. Yeah. I I knew
that this space was needed from the stories. And also, like, one of my most favorite parts of being a run club founder, especially with such a niche audience, it is the success stories, right? The I ran my first mile nonstop. I PR'd today. I signed up for my first 5K.
my time improved. watching the girls that are a part of steady and sweaty, sweaty and steady, my baby. I'm tongue-tied on my own run club, sweaty and steady curvy girl rung club. But watching them come out
Chris Detzel (31:28)
I have to read it. So
Kai Michelle (31:29)
why I know so many people get c tongue-tied sometimes, but watching my girls come out and just being okay with walking and you know, watching them become runners. And I'm like, this
Chris Detzel (31:40)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (31:40)
is beautiful, like this is the point. I'm building.
Endurance runners. I'm building confidence. I'm building a sisterhood. we are so excited when we see each other. We we cheer each other on. There's never a moment where somebody is not being given a hand clap.
Chris Detzel (31:58)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (31:58)
I've gotten so many vulnerable stories. I've had people call me in tears and I'm like, what's wrong? Do I need to come to where you are? And they're like,
No, I'm crying because I'm at the park and I'm running and I've been going through a really tough time and I needed this space. moms coming out of postpartum, women coming out of divorce, women coming out of depression, women who are now empty nesters because their kids are going off to college, women going through breakups, moving from a different country, a different state. And they've come to Kirby Girl Run Club and we have each other. And I'm getting chills thinking about it, but
Chris Detzel (32:34)
I love it.
Kai Michelle (32:34)
I this purpose was bigger than what I thought. It was bigger than a 50 mile 50 mile virtual challenge that was online. It was a space that was needed in Dallas for these women. and we didn't feel left behind because we know how it feels to be left behind. Like you finish a race and they're packing up the medals, or you finish a run and everybody's
Chris Detzel (32:54)
Yeah. Yeah.
Kai Michelle (32:56)
gone and you're like, man, I train for this. Where y'all at? I I want my claps too. I want my bananas
Chris Detzel (33:00)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (33:01)
too, you know? But
Knowing that there's no woman left behind and somebody is always gonna be waiting for you. We're really big on that at my run club. Baby, we don't care if we out there and you the last one coming, you're gonna get the same applause as the first person that came through God. and then also just reminding my girls at all times that it is a privilege to be able to move your body and what a blessing it is to be able body and do so. Cause not everybody, you know, wakes up and, you know, they have that.
that privilege to move their body. So when you're doing it, it's like a blessing, like, I get to run. I get to do these two miles. I get to train, you know, I I get to do this.
Chris Detzel (33:41)
One
thing that comes so it's it's interesting that you brought up kind of everybody gets a clap. So last week we were at this I for I forgot what it was called that at this run that you were there.
Kai Michelle (33:51)
the corporate athlete run this house.
Chris Detzel (33:54)
Yeah, that's right. And so we ran we all ran three miles and I got done and started talking to some people and then you specifically were like, Okay, everybody, let's clap and you you so this lady, she was the last one there and you started yelling and we all started yelling, we all started clapping. And so I I I mean I didn't know that until just now that you told me. I mean I I mean I figured that's why you did it then, but I didn't know
That was just something that you just do and you think about that kind of stuff, right? You know, she could have just
Kai Michelle (34:23)
Yeah.
Chris Detzel (34:24)
just been there and and not nobody said anything, but I'm sure that made her feel very good. I mean, she's part of your club, I think. And, you know, I really love that. That's a great message and you know, pretty touching.
Kai Michelle (34:35)
Thank you.
Chris Detzel (34:36)
So
Kai Michelle (34:37)
Thank you. Thank you. I just know from, you know, a slow runner's perspective, because sometimes it can be disheartening, you know, finishing up and nobody's there. finishing up and, you know, there stuff is being put away. there's nobody, you know, acknowledging you. And
Chris Detzel (34:55)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (34:55)
it can really pull at your own personal confidence because it's like, man, I I trained for this, I bought these new shoes.
I seen all these people at the starting line. And you know, we ran the same race, just a different pace. But I I
Chris Detzel (35:09)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (35:10)
finished and, you know, I know how it feels to be left behind. I know how it feels not to to to have anybody there for you. when I'm on the trail now, if if I'm not super, super locked in, when I see other runners, I I feel like runners, we all do that though, like a little high five or a little root or whatever. But
Cheering, cheering on the back of the pack, it it'll it'll really do something to you. If you ever finish a race early and you just stick around for those last bit of people, I promise you, you're gonna go home feeling a little bit more different. If you stay and you at least just cheer, cheer for like three to five, you know, back of the pack people. They're
Chris Detzel (35:47)
Sure.
Kai Michelle (35:48)
gonna appreciate that because nobody does that for them, you know. Once the big crowd
Chris Detzel (35:52)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (35:52)
is gone and the pictures are taken and
once awards are given and stuff, there are runners that are still out there that paid the same price, that ran the same miles, and they get there and they're sweaty and they're out of breath and they're working on their fitness and everybody's gone. You know? So yeah. They deserve that same applause, that same appreciation.
Chris Detzel (36:13)
Yeah, I don't disagree at all. I th I think that's a a a great cause and and a great thing that you're doing and it's a good message for everyone, you know. And and I think that
Kai Michelle (36:22)
Thank you.
Chris Detzel (36:22)
if I think about just running in general, we do it f I do it for my health. One. Two, I do it for the community because I love engaging with people. I started this podcast so that I can talk to people like you that I might not normally talk to in real life. You know, and so you know, when I reach out to you.
Kai Michelle (36:37)
Yeah. Cause can everywhere.
Chris Detzel (36:40)
Well, I mean, you know, it's it's you can't run with everybody. You know, it's just that's
Kai Michelle (36:44)
True. This is this is true. Yeah.
Chris Detzel (36:46)
just that's just the reality. But what it has, you know, something like this this platform has brought me is is brought me to people like you and a lot of other people within the running community that I didn't think I would ever have access to. You know, not say like, I'm somebody, but I mean I just want to talk to runners because I have that much passion for it. You know, whether you're you know, I'd be fast, slow or just running, you know, we do it.
you know, f for a good reason. And and most people do it for health or, you know, like you said, people go through divorces and so there's a lot of stress in life or work or a lot of reasons that you even mentioned that, you know, we just want to get out there, you know, and
a lot of us really want to do it for community. I mean, and that's what you've created
Kai Michelle (37:22)
Yeah. Yes.
Chris Detzel (37:24)
is this pretty cool community. And it's a cause
Kai Michelle (37:27)
Yeah.
Chris Detzel (37:27)
for, you know, for a reason. And I love that. It's really cool. That's kind of what keeps you going. That's what brings people to you, you know.
Kai Michelle (37:32)
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
It's definitely we're in the era of and I love this for us, our generation, the millennials. I don't know what was in the water, but we love fitness right now. And I hope that this mom doesn't
Chris Detzel (37:48)
Yeah, that's right.
Kai Michelle (37:49)
die. but we love fitness right now, and it makes it even better that we are a social media generation because we get to see it all over. Our algorithm
Chris Detzel (37:59)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (37:59)
gets trained to it.
But we're a generation that loves fitness and people just want to get active. And there is something for each and everybody to do. My best friend, my dearest best friend, I love her. She is not a runner. She's tried it before with me. You know, she'll run with me, but that's not her thing. And it's okay. But you know, she has still found her fitness thing. For me, it's running. And I was able to connect and tap in with so many runners.
over the last couple of years and be inspired by so many that I didn't even realize that I was inspiring other people at one point. And then now to have a run club and our social media page is about to hit 3,000 followers and I have
Chris Detzel (38:41)
Solid.
Kai Michelle (38:42)
anywhere between 60 to 100 girls showing up for a run club meetup. And I'm like, I'm so blown away. Like
Chris Detzel (38:48)
That's awesome. Yeah.
Kai Michelle (38:50)
we we love this. We're here because we want to work out.
we joined a run club because of course community. And that's another reason why I ended up coming back out to run clubs. because I was running by myself and I'm like, this is good, but I think I wanna run with some people. Let me go try out some run clubs, right? So essentially, yeah,
Chris Detzel (39:05)
Yeah. I don't wanna run about myself all the time, so
Kai Michelle (39:09)
like you know, we always run by ourselves, but if you
Chris Detzel (39:11)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (39:12)
can if you can make it to two or three different ones throughout the week, it makes the run community like just that much better because now we're gonna see each other at local five K's and
Chris Detzel (39:22)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (39:22)
You
know, BMW weekend, like that's that's our weekend. I always speak about BMW weekend like that's the that's our Super Bowl. Like, yeah, you're coming out here for BMW weekend, we're gonna have a great time. What what race are you running? You know, like yeah.
Chris Detzel (39:35)
I'll be there for the half as well. So my wife and I are are running it. We run it a lot.
Kai Michelle (39:37)
Yeah. See? It's our s it's our Super
Bowl. It's our Super Bowl.
Chris Detzel (39:42)
Yeah, I hope to see you out there.
Kai Michelle (39:44)
I will be out there. I'll be out there and sweaty and steady. We'll have a tent,
Chris Detzel (39:49)
Okay.
Kai Michelle (39:49)
probably at mile seven or eight. And we're gonna be out there with with some poppers and we're gonna have our big orange tent and we will be over there cheering for every runner, fast and slow. Yes.
Chris Detzel (39:59)
Nice. Love
it. Well, I'll come by and say hi or at least give you high five or something. You're running it, so it probably won't be you know fatigue. Yeah. 100%. I will.
Kai Michelle (40:04)
Yes, yes. No, I'm running it. But when you see my girls, still, you know. Right. We
I might might have some pickle pickle bites over there or something. Something unique. You know, like, you guys can get oranges
Chris Detzel (40:18)
I like pickle bites.
Kai Michelle (40:19)
over there, Gatorade over there. I I'm I wanna do something unique for the runners, like, yeah, let's let's give them this when they come by.
Chris Detzel (40:26)
Hundred percent. I'll be taking some of those.
Kai Michelle (40:28)
Yes.
Chris Detzel (40:29)
so tell me quickly about your marathon and how you think you're gonna train for it. D do you still have that same coach that's gonna help you?
Kai Michelle (40:34)
Yes.
Yes, yes, yes. I still have the same running run coach. okay. And then two, I had to go back and make a correction. So this BMW this year is gonna be my third marathon, half marathon. I ran
Chris Detzel (40:45)
Okay.
Kai Michelle (40:45)
BMW last year, then I did Chicago half marathon in June. So yeah, this
Chris Detzel (40:48)
Got it. Got it.
Kai Michelle (40:50)
is gonna be my third. So yes, I will have the same run coach for every woman's marathon. I
Used to say, I'm not gonna run a marathon. I don't desire to run a marathon. And now I've paid my money to run a marathon. But I'm excited.
Chris Detzel (41:03)
Yeah.
Kai Michelle (41:05)
I when I started having an interest in marathons, I kind of narrowed it down. I would love to do New York City because I experienced it from a spectator point of view, loved it. Get to run through all the boroughs, every woman's marathon, because it's every woman's marathon, it's full of women. I just I think about a lot of
passion and and push and grit and I want to be out there for that. Like an all women's marathon. Heck yeah. And then the third marathon
Chris Detzel (41:31)
Check yeah.
Kai Michelle (41:32)
that I would do would have to be any Disney marathon that I could get into. I love Disney. I'm such a Disney buff. I'm a Disney girly, but the tickets just sell out so fast. But if I can get those three off, I I feel like I'll be fine. yeah. I can tell my grandchildren, you know your your granny ran three marathons back in my head.
Chris Detzel (41:51)
Exactly.
Kai Michelle (41:52)
You know, so what y'all doing? I di I did three marathons, you know. What about y'all? Maybe more, I don't know. But for sure I wanna be able to tell my grandchildren that I ran three marathons and I wasn't even an athlete in high school.
Chris Detzel (42:05)
Yeah, I mean
it I I think it's it's funny because you don't have I've talked to a lot of athletes that were high school and college and and all that kind of stuff, but there's a lot of people that aren't. I mean, they're you know, you've got fast, slow people that started in their thirties and forties that, you know, are doing a lot of really great running things, you know, and and and so I think that you can start at any age, you know, it doesn't really matter. And you don't have to be an athlete to start running. And I think that's kind of the allure of it is
You can run walk, you can walk, you can jog, do whatever, you know, like those kind of things. And I think to me that's
Kai Michelle (42:38)
Yeah.
Chris Detzel (42:39)
the message. Fast, slow, do what you want, you know, just get some get healthy. Like you said, it doesn't have to be running. Be a cyclist, be a swimmer, be whatever, you know, weightlifter or whatever, you know, like
Kai Michelle (42:45)
Yeah. A lifter. Yeah. Do Pilates.
Do whatever. They're fitness is at our fingertips. And even with thinking about fitness being another bill, because like we're we're in a a pretty tough economy right now. Running for the most part is free, right? Put on some shoes, go outside for a
Chris Detzel (43:04)
Yeah, well.
Kai Michelle (43:04)
run. until we really start getting into it. But
But yeah, all the other things before that, yeah, the the thought of it is, you know, but there is so much.
Chris Detzel (43:13)
But you know, the thought is you can put on some
tennis shoes and run and but you know, if you do that for too long, you're gonna hurt your feet. Yeah, exactly. Let's not let's not get people too excited about that free thing.
Kai Michelle (43:18)
Then one thing, then one expense, then the next. But yeah. It's it's definitely. I know. I'm sorry,
y'all. I I'm not trying to mislead you. It's the thought of it is free, but the things that you need is not. It's not free. You're gonna you gotta spend a little dime for your startup, you know, but you're investing in your body. You can tell yourself that. Yeah.
Chris Detzel (43:41)
Something well it's funny but that you say that and and something that I think you know my wife tells me all the time it's like when you invest in your body it's worth it. You know, it's not like if you're you can think about all the things you're investing in. A lot of people are investing in, you know, whether it's going out to eat, whether it's getting that coffee every single day, or you know, whatever it is. This is your health, you know, and
Kai Michelle (44:01)
Yeah.
Chris Detzel (44:02)
your health is the single most important thing. That's all you got, you know? And so that's that's something to invest in.
That's something to put money in. Don't feel bad about putting money into your health. Take something away that, you know, maybe isn't that
Kai Michelle (44:13)
Correct. Yeah.
Chris Detzel (44:15)
healthy, you know? so, but I that's my motto, you know, like, this $300. I'm not saying that I'm not watching my budget, but it's like, well, I think it's okay, you know, I just won't do this other thing, that kind of stuff.
Kai Michelle (44:29)
Yeah.
Especially like, you know, with shoes or something like that, like
Chris Detzel (44:32)

arch support or recovery, you know, those things add up, but they're needed, especially when you are when you're putting any type of tax on your body, you also have to relieve that as well. And that stuff can definitely add up, but you know, it's it's in it's important, you know, from deodorant, laundry detergent.
the proper clothing, the proper shoes, the proper socks, like it's a lot of small details. Then like, you know, massages, cold plunge, saunas, chiropractor, you any of it is is gonna add up.
Chris Detzel (45:08)
So is there anything that I missed that you're like, man, we should have really talked about this thing or that a message you want to send out or anything that
Kai Michelle (45:17)
I do, I do have something I want to say because I didn't get to touch on it, but I would be doing myself and my team a disservice. But with sweaty and steady, heavy is the head that wears the crown. And it may it is it's never all me. I have such a wonderful leadership team, such a wonderful committee. they they're just amazing girls who have also started their running journey like
We we are all new runners, beginner runners. but watching their journey, becoming close friends with them. I have Taylor and Bridge and Bam and Jay and Charisma and CJ, and I have such an amazing team. I I can cry to them because I'm so happy or satisfied with how run went. they're natural nurtures, they they're problem solvers, they're hard workers, they're runners.
And they help keep the sweaty and steady boat afloat. I can't be in 30 places in one time and at one time. So I may be working or I'm gone out of town or I'm doing something and I'm able to look in our group chat and my girls have already greeted somebody and reassured somebody and helped them with something to the point where girls that even that aren't even on my leadership team, like Dominique or Kayla.
they'll just come and they'll pick right up off of it, like, we meet here. this is the answer to this question. And we have just become such a beautiful community. But at the same time, every time that there's a fresh face, nobody ever has to feel like, I'm not welcome over there, or I don't know if this is for me. whatever. We we welcome everybody. Like we've had men come out and run with us just because it's this curvy girl run club, like
Everybody is welcome and we do a really good job at letting people know you're safe here. This is a safe space. You're not gonna get left behind. We won't allow you to get lost. yeah, yeah. So that's what I wanted to add. Thank you to my committee. I love y'all so much. Y'all can get whatever y'all want from me. I love y'all.
Chris Detzel (47:19)
Well this has been really great to get to know you, the run club and kind of what you've created, you know, within this community. And I think it's it's needed and you've created a a space that you know women can come and be themselves and run at their pace and don't have to worry about trying to be fast and you know and exclude them. You know, like it's it's it's a very it's a great thing that you create that because a lot of people they like, well I can't run with them, so they just don't go.
You know,
Kai Michelle (47:46)
Okay.
Chris Detzel (47:47)
so I I love that. kind of Go ahead.
Kai Michelle (47:48)
Yeah. It's it's definitely
it's definitely a space that all women, all body types are welcome, you know, regardless.
Chris Detzel (47:58)
Awesome. I love it. Well, Kai, this has been good, and I really appreciate
Kai Michelle (47:59)
Thank you. Thank you.
Chris Detzel (48:01)
