Chris Detzel (00:00.514)
All right, welcome to another DFW running talk. I'm Chris Detzel, and today's special guest is Tyree Taylor. Tyree, how's it going, man?

Tyree Taylor (00:08.866)
It's going well, man. How are you?

Chris Detzel (00:12.462)
Doing well. You know, so we've met we've met like a year or two ago. I can't remember. What was it's been a while.

Tyree Taylor (00:17.666)
Yeah, roughly roughly yeah. It's it's been a while. I remember you at the Forums Follows for sure. meeting you actually for the first time in person there.

Chris Detzel (00:29.454)
Yeah, form follows fitness. Yeah. yeah, I think that was I guess it was last year. I was doing quick hit interviews and you and one of your buddies got on, so that was pretty cool. So I appreciate you doing that. You got quite a bit of yeah. So you know, you've got kind of an interesting journey in running and I'll just want to kinda dive a little deeper into that. And you know, before we get into that, I know that you were signed up to to run Indianapolis.

Tyree Taylor (00:29.912)
Yeah.

Tyree Taylor (00:40.632)
Yeah.

Chris Detzel (00:59.588)
Are you you're running the marathon, is that right, or the half?

Tyree Taylor (01:02.915)
marathon.

Chris Detzel (01:05.248)
Okay. And is this your first one or how many have you done before?

Tyree Taylor (01:07.497)
It's my second one. So my first one was BMW back in 2023. So that was my first marathon inside.

Chris Detzel (01:13.39)
Yep. it's been a while.

So we're gonna dive into that. So let before I we talk about all this running stuff, you know, did you do anything and you know, tell me a little bit about what you did in high school and if you went to college or after high school, whatever that w looks like.

Tyree Taylor (01:33.506)
And high school.

I played mostly football. But I had my I had my I had my hands in all the sports, you know, basketball for a little bit, baseball, track, but my main focus was football. I come from a small town, e East Texas. So most people may know, most people may not know of Hughes Springs. It's a very small town.

Like I said, I started playing football down there and then I recently not recently, but my sophomore year, I moved to Dallas, finished out my year there playing football, baseball, and I was actually playing under Dion Sanders. I'm I'm sure you may know of him.

Chris Detzel (02:25.562)
Never heard of it. No, I'm just checking. What'd you play? cornerback or

Tyree Taylor (02:27.384)
Okay.

we go.

Tyree Taylor (02:34.155)
I play corner, yes sir.

Chris Detzel (02:36.826)
Okay. Yeah. We good?

Tyree Taylor (02:39.915)
I was fair. I was fair. I was fair. I started. I was on the starting team, so I was good enough. You know what I mean?

Chris Detzel (02:47.266)
Yeah, yeah. So so no real like distance running, just more of like, you know, sprinting and things like that with football, basketball, that kind of stuff. Okay. Which

Tyree Taylor (02:55.996)
Well yes, sir. More sprinting and track. I ran the one hundred, two hundred. Yeah, that was my journey.

Chris Detzel (03:04.472)
off speed. well at least you have the speed. So did you where did you go to college?

Tyree Taylor (03:09.118)
Yeah, absolutely.

Tyree Taylor (03:15.463)
So I went to college in Oklahoma. I went to Bacon College in Muskogee, one of the oldest colleges in Oklahoma. It was a Native American college. it is now since closed, but I I played a little ball there, for like one year. Same cornerback, you know, probably one of the smallest guys on the team, but you know, yeah, we weren't that good in college.

Chris Detzel (03:44.602)
It's a lot different. It's a lot different. And yeah, and you're not tall or anything like that and and not a huge guy, so I'm sure, you know.

Tyree Taylor (03:46.985)
Yeah, it's a lot different.

Tyree Taylor (03:53.853)
Yeah, no, but I you know, I I still made impact in practice and man, I think that that was one of the things, you know, coaches noticed about me is my, you know, determination. Every play, you know, give give your a hundred percent, you know what mean? So yeah, man, it was it's quite it was fun.

Chris Detzel (04:07.523)
Work ethic.

Chris Detzel (04:11.128)
Yeah.

Chris Detzel (04:16.707)
Yeah. I'm sure this is your recording has stopped. Are you still there?

Tyree Taylor (04:25.963)
Yeah, I put my phone on Do Not Disturb. I don't know how that still got through.

Chris Detzel (04:33.029)
yeah, an incoming call, that's what I said.

Tyree Taylor (04:34.793)
Yeah.

Chris Detzel (04:37.977)
Well well it's still recording, so I'll I'll delete that. so

So you went to college, did a little ball. Did you do any kind of longer distance there or was was this later down the road?

Tyree Taylor (04:53.2)
No man, long distance didn't come until twenty twenty three.

Chris Detzel (04:59.041)
Okay. What have you been doing since then? I mean, what were you doing before? Before marathon. Let's let's talk a little bit about before like after college. What did you do? Nothing?

Tyree Taylor (05:00.282)
Yeah. My first marriage.

Tyree Taylor (05:09.594)
Man, after college, I sh in college even, you know, I was distracted with a lot of things. You know, the drugs, the women, you know what I mean, drinking, you know what I mean, just just living a worldly life, as they say. And I remember after college I went back to live with my mom and I worked at a call center. This was in Longview, Texas. probably about thirty minutes away from Tyler.

Chris Detzel (05:21.358)
Really?

Tyree Taylor (05:39.285)
And yeah, man, I was working at this call center and didn't know where I wanted to do in life. I remember taking an ASVAF or maybe the Air Force or something like that. It didn't really go too well with that. So in the midst of, you know, trying to figure out what to do with my life, I met a guy and we just up and moved to California, man. I lived in my car and

Chris Detzel (05:40.483)
Yeah.

Tyree Taylor (06:09.371)
Shh. That was for about two years out there in LA. Just wilding.

Chris Detzel (06:17.645)
You lived in your car for two years?

Tyree Taylor (06:18.256)
Yeah, we we lived in the well, not the whole two years. I'd say the first year was spent living in a car. It was at a coupe. If anybody knows like a Scion TC, you know how limited that space is. But yeah, it was just me and him in the car for like a year, man. And we we ended up making a short film about it. It's called LA I Love You, but but yeah, that was just one of the

Craziest moments I can say in my life, you know, just that span in LA for about two years, man, just man.

Chris Detzel (06:59.481)
So all right we'll get into the running in a minute, but so you go to LA and you're living in a car, are you you're doing a film, are you I mean, are you working? Is this when you get into drugs and stuff like that? What's tell me more. I mean you got me interested. So

Tyree Taylor (07:01.369)
Yeah.

Tyree Taylor (07:07.449)
Yeah.

Tyree Taylor (07:15.644)
I mean I mean yeah, yeah. so during that time, man, like I said, I wanted to be an actor. you know, so you hear these stories about people moving to LA chasing their dreams and you know, becoming an actor, becoming famous and things like that. so when we first moved down there,

Yeah man, a lot of smoking weed. You know, weed was pretty much legal at that time down there, so well still. But yeah, man, smoking a lot of weed, going to a lot of parties, drinking.

Well, all of that was just trying to mass the pain of, you know, just living in the car. But we were doing a lot of networking too, you know, just meeting new people. And I remember there was a time to where they were shooting a movie on Hollywood Boulevard. I think it was a Quentin Tarantino movie. And I remember us walking the boulevard and we just asked like this random guy, like, hey, like, how do you how do you get this type of job? You know, like he was a prop.

Chris Detzel (08:03.085)
Yeah.

Chris Detzel (08:07.309)
Yeah.

Chris Detzel (08:19.086)
Yeah.

Tyree Taylor (08:27.969)
guy, you know, and just went out on a limb to ask him, you know, how does he get this job? No, we wasn't working out there when we first moved out there. But we had money saved up, but it quickly dwindled and yeah, man, just ask that guy, like, you know, how does one get a job like this? And then from there he hooked us up with his brother. We told him our story and his brother like shot films and yeah, he just wanted to make a short film out of him. So he was like, yeah, let's do it.

Chris Detzel (08:59.929)
Is that is that short film out somewhere people can see it?

Tyree Taylor (09:02.667)
Yeah, it's on it's on Vimeo. If you go on Vimeo, actually if you search it up in Google, it's just called LA I Love You But You may have to put my name or anything like that, but it'll pop up on Vimeo. Yes, sir.

Chris Detzel (09:15.883)
Okay. Cool. All right. So you you spend some time in LA and doing some crazy stuff. So, you know, that now that time's gone, come back home. Did you move in with your mom again or your family somewhere? Or what what happened then?

Tyree Taylor (09:31.818)
Man, I I went from LA to North Carolina to Jersey to Florida. Dude, I have a my life is a movie, brother. It's a movie. Yeah, it's a movie. And from Florida I came back home due to a situation that happened there. But yeah, I eventually made my way back to Texas and moved to Dallas with my pops. And that's kind of where my running journey started.

Chris Detzel (09:38.252)
Okay.

Chris Detzel (09:43.245)
Sounds like it. I love it.

Tyree Taylor (10:01.065)
In a nutshell.

Chris Detzel (10:02.285)
Okay.

Tyree Taylor (10:05.289)
Yeah.

Chris Detzel (10:05.859)
So you were like, what what made you how'd you get into running then and then let's go from there? Like did you meet somebody or you just say, Man, I need to exercise or I need to get out of the shit that I'm doing now? What what was going

Tyree Taylor (10:20.574)
So I started in the gym and I was just like, hmm, all right, this is getting kind of boring. You know what I mean? And a guy who did one of my tattoos, I seen him on an Instagram story. He was at just one of these run clubs. And I think it was ZFT run club at the time. And like I said, I'm just I just went out on a limb and said, hey, I'm gonna just go. Well, I was running a little bit before that, like just maybe two miles here.

Chris Detzel (10:28.141)
Yeah.

Chris Detzel (10:40.643)
Yeah.

Tyree Taylor (10:50.686)
Four miles on a treadmill there. But I wasn't in a community. So when I saw him post an Instagram story of, you know, a group of people running, I was just like, hey, where y'all be running at this, you know, trying to get a little information on that. And then I went to ZFT for the first time. And then from there, man, I just stayed consistent and running. But yeah, that's how I started essentially.

Chris Detzel (11:16.099)
Did d did you go to Z F T for a while or what what would that look like?

Tyree Taylor (11:20.957)
Yeah, I went for a while, man. I went for a while. I was very consistent there. go ahead.

Chris Detzel (11:26.091)
Okay.

Chris Detzel (11:31.021)
Yeah, you know, that group was huge, here in Dallas. I mean, now they're in Houston and then all of a sudden they kinda they just quit Dallas for whatever reason and you know, now you have Theo and his crew running up, kinda ki killing it now, you know. So

Tyree Taylor (11:44.188)
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And that's where that's where I first met Theo at ZFT. And yeah, I d I just remember it being sort of like a you know, a family of its own. I know they did have the the Houston chapter as well. went out there for a race, one of their Houston races and yeah, ZFT, yeah, it was it was a pretty it was a pretty

monumental thing at the time. Like I said, I never knew of running clubs before that. so that was my first one. And yeah, I remember that year being my first marathon year, 2023.

Chris Detzel (12:28.937)
So you started running with these guys and did you start did you want any 5Ks to say, my gosh, you know, like this is pretty cool. I'm gonna race race the 5k, 10k, whatever. Did you work yourself up to the marathon? You know, what did that look like?

Tyree Taylor (12:46.144)
I ran a couple 5Ks, ran a couple 5Ks. I remember there was a two how to handle one that I ran. The ZFT chapter in Houston. They had a Juneteenth race, I believe I ran. Kind of worked my way up slowly. I remember one Skyline race that they had. I was supposed to run the 10K.

And like I wasn't really like a racer. I was just running it, you know, to kind of test myself, you know what I mean? Feel the environment and just kinda felt it kinda felt like I like this, like I like this space. But there was a skyline race that I ran 10K, but I missed the turn for the 10k and I ran a half. So yeah, shees man.

Chris Detzel (13:20.535)
Yeah, yeah.

Tyree Taylor (13:40.782)
I run a half like my first year just

Chris Detzel (13:42.361)
Well.

I see did you actually run the whole half?

Tyree Taylor (13:47.853)
I do. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Chris Detzel (13:51.725)
That's a big mistake. So So hey, instead of a

Tyree Taylor (13:53.189)
Yeah, I knew there was no turning back after some point.

Chris Detzel (13:58.264)
Yeah. After a ten K you or after the half marathon, how'd you feel afterwards? I'm sure it was pretty rough. Especially not expecting that.

Tyree Taylor (14:05.379)
man, it was work. It was work. It was work for sure. Yeah, it was work. I felt good. I felt good, honestly. I can say I I I really felt good because even before then, like I said, I was a consistent runner. You know, I was being consistent. Maybe three miles here, you know, I can't remember, you know, how many.

miles a week that I was averaging, but you know, I didn't have a watch at the time. I just tracked it off my phone. So man, it was it was just sort of meant to be in that way, I guess.

Chris Detzel (14:41.197)
You know, I think that first year you just learn a lot. You know, like you're you're running your 5K some 10Ks and you're gonna mess up a little bit and do it the half. But you know, it's it's I I feel like anybody that starts running at first, you're gonna learn, you know, about the watch. You're gonna learn about the amount of miles that you have to run and you know, for different races or for different you know, you know, yeah, races and things like that. So, you know, it just it's just a learning curve, it's the journey.

Tyree Taylor (15:08.363)
Right. Yeah. No, brother, I just wanted to complete it. I just wanted to do one.

Chris Detzel (15:11.587)
So so what what made you decide to kind of sign up for your first marathon? Was was there anybody in the group that you were interested in doing it with? Was anybody inspiring you?

Tyree Taylor (15:37.411)
Just battling a lot in the mind. You know, that's when, you know, David Goggins kinda got hot on the social media and just listening to a lot of podcasts that he was on and just wanted to test myself to finish.

Chris Detzel (15:45.335)
Yeah.

Tyree Taylor (15:54.912)
Yeah, that's just kind of what prompted me, like, yeah, just let's just go for the big one.

Chris Detzel (16:03.427)
What do you so how'd you train for it?

Tyree Taylor (16:07.818)
I didn't. Yeah, I didn't. I didn't have like a training block or anything like that. Like I said, just brick by brick, just stacking runs, you know what I mean? I don't remember ever doing like any long, long runs or like I said, any training blocks or anything like that. I just went just went for it.

Chris Detzel (16:08.153)
Do you remember?

Chris Detzel (16:13.827)
Yeah.

Chris Detzel (16:31.043)
How'd you do?

Tyree Taylor (16:34.759)
Shh, I think I did pretty well for for like my first time. I did a the time was three twenty-five. So

Chris Detzel (16:44.461)
Damn. Matt's really good for not training. That's kind of impressive.

Tyree Taylor (16:46.601)
Yeah, that

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Just not having a training block or rather it just being my first year of running, that's what I went out there and produced.

Chris Detzel (17:01.741)
Yeah. Wow. All right. So what'd you learn from that? You know, like I mean, that's pretty good. I'm sure you're pretty pretty like, my god, you know, like three twenty five for my very first marathon and didn't train as much as maybe I should have.

Tyree Taylor (17:17.407)
And I say

That last five K of the marathon is where I hit the wall. It was the last 5K. I remember it being, you know, a couple of heels. the sun had came out, you know, it was well out about that time. But I remember me hitting the wall at like mile twenty-three. And I was just like, Man, I I didn't know what it was, right? First time I ever experienced that in my life.

Chris Detzel (17:27.609)
Sure.

Tyree Taylor (17:49.29)
Being that, you I was new at running, especially long distance, first marathon, I didn't know what my body was experiencing. You know what I mean? I just knew like, whoa, like this is you know what I mean? luckily we had people out there, you know what I'm saying? Yeah, luckily we had people out there like ZFT to kind of cheer us on at the time. But at you know, at some point it's just like, bro, it's you versus you, you know.

Chris Detzel (18:03.447)
I do, trust me.

Chris Detzel (18:12.601)
Hundred percent.

Tyree Taylor (18:17.748)
The noise kind of fades. Nobody can do it for you. Not it, you don't have I didn't ram, I didn't roll the music. Like I said, I was just looking at the person in front of me and just kept pushing. But I did hit a wall. I stopped and walked for like a minute, maybe, but I knew I just had to finish. You know what I mean?

Chris Detzel (18:19.053)
Nobody can do it for ya. Yeah.

Chris Detzel (18:38.861)
Yeah. I mean, did you drink anything, eat anything, like take ch gels or anything or

Tyree Taylor (18:48.423)
I remember taking, if not one, two gels. I remember I don't remember what I ate, but I know I had to eat something before. I I can't remember what I ate before, but I knew that by the time it was over, that was what I needed to do, like fuel properly. You know what I mean? You just can't, I'm not gonna say you can't.

But raw dogging something of that nature is ver it's gonna be difficult. You know what I mean? It's gonna be difficult. So I remember taking the jail during the race once we hit around like White Rock or something like that. but yeah, I knew like when it was over, like, yeah, we're gonna prepare next time better, you know.

Chris Detzel (19:24.057)
Exactly.

Chris Detzel (19:41.71)
Yeah. So all right, you mentioned that was your first marathon, your second marathon's coming up. What what have you been doing for the last couple of years? What has that been like? You know, have you you know looked at other running clubs? Are you I mean, obviously you're running with somebody different than, you know, ZFT 'cause they're not around. So what what is all that kind of look like and what have you been doing for the last couple of years?

Tyree Taylor (20:01.433)
Yeah, we do.

Tyree Taylor (20:06.311)
Brother, I've been training, failing, learning, growing. Man, I've been

Chris Detzel (20:14.456)
Yeah.

Tyree Taylor (20:20.262)
Like I said, when let's say twenty twenty-four came around, I started to take it a little bit more serious as in, you know, getting in the right shoes.

You know, just finding new people to run with that's like at a higher level than me, for lack of better words. I man, yeah, when run it up dropped, it's kinda like, Okay, now that we don't have ZFT, we have another, you know, community that I can just kinda blend with and just stay consistent there, but like you said

Disregarding the run clubs and everything like that, like in my personal life, man, is just staying consistent. Running around the block, you know. just getting miles in, brother. Like just really locking in on feet on pavement, you know, time spent on feet, just going for it, getting more structure with the runs. You know what I mean? Just not really.

going out there and just running. But man, these past couple of years I I've just been building.

Chris Detzel (21:34.275)
Yeah.

Chris Detzel (21:39.629)
Is there anybody that over the last couple of years, year or so, that you've really enjoyed running with, like a specific group and or person? Persons? Any shout outs?

Tyree Taylor (21:53.37)
Tyree Taylor (21:59.128)
Yeah, I wanna shout out everybody, man. I wanna shout out ZFT. I wanna shout out Round It Up.

I wanna shout out my guy Johnny B. I wanna shout out my guy Q, Rob, Brent,

Tyree Taylor (22:23.553)
Man, it it's so many people that I've came across that I've, you know, enjoy training with and running with and

Chris Detzel (22:27.126)
Exactly.

Tyree Taylor (22:32.375)
Man, my loved ones, you know, even my cousin, Corey,

My loved ones, Daisy, Ryan. Man, there's so many names that I can just remember, just think back to, man, okay, they were they were they were there during the grind, you know? Like they know, they know who they are. If if I if I don't have your name, excuse me.

Chris Detzel (22:51.938)
And

Chris Detzel (22:58.105)
Yeah, and think that that's what running's about is yeah. I think they understand it. I think that that's what running's about to me has always been about community and bringing the people that you people start you start building new relationships with, old relationships with. And it just to me, it also helps and and it sounds like it's helped you in your life. I mean, it's always it's helped me to kind of be focused on something good and positive.

It helps me, you know, I accomplish certain things. Hey, I did a marathon or I did a half marathon or whatever, right? It keeps you healthy, you know. and s I wouldn't say stress-free, but it helps with stress too, you know. because you're too you're too damn tired to after a big training block, you're like, all right, I don't have time to, you know, go out and do crazy things. I gotta go run tomorrow or whatever, you know. So I don't know if you've experienced that at all.

Tyree Taylor (23:26.733)
Yeah.

Tyree Taylor (23:33.719)
Yeah.

Tyree Taylor (23:38.475)
Resume.

Tyree Taylor (23:51.612)
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And and to be honest, man, some some nights I still did that. Some nights I still, you know, spent nights at the club or you know, just late nights and still got up and hit the pavement. You know what I mean? So I appreciate those nights as well because they showed me, you know, you know, my dedication to the game and where you have to respect the game of running to.

Chris Detzel (24:06.413)
Yeah.

Chris Detzel (24:10.392)
Yeah.

Tyree Taylor (24:19.21)
You know what I mean? So yeah.

Chris Detzel (24:23.577)
Hundred percent. And and I think that's awesome. Now so as you kinda started doing the the the better training and and things like that, how does what do you what does it look like now? You've you've got Indianapolis coming up, how have you been training? What's a bit different? And just tell me kind of about that experience.

Tyree Taylor (24:47.443)
So

Tyree Taylor (24:53.586)
Longer runs. eighteen to twenty miles, brother. Like I said, I I'm still like a renegade runner. I don't really follow a structured plan.

Everybody's a little different. like I said, I do have a group. Me, Rob, Brent, Q. You know, we get long runs in on the weekend. You know, they're training for a marathon, so I just kind of fall in with them wherever I can, you know, wherever my schedule frees up. We go to White Rock and we get some long miles in. But during the week, I just wanna focus on stretching, you know, those.

Chris Detzel (25:36.653)
Yeah.

Tyree Taylor (25:44.68)
Those easy runs, you know, three to four miles here and there. Maybe some tempo runs dropped in there a little bit.

I kinda don't do like strength training in the gym, lower body, maybe as I should, but kind of stay in the gym, you know, do upper body just to work that muscle. You know what I mean? I think running is is enough, you know, for a skinny guy like me, like for my legs. You know what mean? recent yeah, recently I just ran to ran from Dallas to Fort Worth. Like this was last Sunday.

Chris Detzel (26:15.267)
You're young, so that helps.

Tyree Taylor (26:24.796)
That was thirty three miles. You said why?

Chris Detzel (26:25.581)
Hey, why'd you do that? Seems like why'd you do that?

Tyree Taylor (26:32.188)
Man, I I tell you, I tell you, but before my wreck last year in August, man, I I I just had put it in my notes. Like, hmm, I want to run from Dallas to Fort Worth one day. I don't I didn't I didn't hear of nobody ever doing it. It was just a thought that came to me and I just wrote it in my notes like, hmm, one day I'll do better. And a couple months ago a guy hit me and he was just like, Hey, bro.

I'm gonna run the Dallas before World and was like, bro, you don't already know. I've already put that like into this realm. I've already thought about that. I've already, you know, you know, put that on my notes. So let's do it.

Chris Detzel (27:17.111)
So what'd you do? Like mark out kind of the the trill and like, okay, this is how we're gonna do it and then run and then how'd you get back? And how'd you feel?

Tyree Taylor (27:26.194)
We literally just mapped it out on the car. We started at ATT District. We ran adjacent to not on the highway. This was like streets adjacent to Interstate 30. So yeah, we just mapped it out on the car. I mean in the car and ran through Grand Prairie, ran through Arlington.

Couple side streets in Fort Worth and we just made it downtown Fort Worth. And luckily we had some support. You know, people in cars, you know, going to every checkpoint that we mapped out. And yeah, we just I dude on our way back, we me and this guy TJ, we got in the back of this truck, like the truck bed, and we just rolled on the interstate on the way back. That's how we got back.

Chris Detzel (28:21.529)
You didn't know the person or what?

Tyree Taylor (28:23.643)
that was my first time meeting him that day.

Chris Detzel (28:28.697)
All right. How are you how are you feeling? That that's insane, dude. Like I I mean, I I know people that have done, you know, they they'll take a bus to like Foot Worth and then they'll run to Dallas. So I I know people have done it, but the way you did it is a little different. You just mapped it out and ran over there and then got in the back of some dude's truck and got home somehow. So that's

Tyree Taylor (28:29.073)
Yeah.

Tyree Taylor (28:42.179)
Abs yeah, yeah.

Tyree Taylor (28:52.133)
Yeah, and I felt good, brother. I felt good man, I felt so good. I think the pace was between nine minutes and eleven. I mean, we have people with us, you know, we have to stop, of course, every five to eight miles of you know, stuff like that, but man, my body felt I was amazed on how my body just felt during the run. like I said, my legs didn't get that heavy.

feeling until maybe the last five, six miles. Cause we we encountered some hills that I kinda didn't expect. Cause we had to change the route. And I didn't I didn't really know the route change, but I just followed it on my phone, you know, as we were running. But kind of hit some hills that I didn't expect. But man, I I felt good nevertheless. I was I was just surprised on how good my body felt and yeah, how we managed to pull through.

Chris Detzel (29:37.24)
Yeah.

Chris Detzel (29:53.198)
Yeah, I mean it's it's pretty bold of you to go do that. Did you now how are you feeling that now that you're going to Indianapolis and do you have a goal, you know, that's you know, attached to it?

Tyree Taylor (30:05.816)
So three.

Chris Detzel (30:08.729)
Sub three. That's a big one, man. I mean, going from three twenty five, which is really great, to sub three. Wow. You're ready for you're ready for it, huh?

Tyree Taylor (30:16.226)
Yes, sir. Yes, sir. I I will, I will do it. Yeah, I will. I will do it. Yeah, I will. yeah, going from 325 three years ago, that's I I've I'm so confident that I will do that. You know what I mean? Just because of the work I put in in these past few years. Not gonna say it's gonna be a piece of cake, but I'm gonna make it look like it.

Chris Detzel (30:38.327)
Yeah.

Chris Detzel (30:47.843)
You're gonna push it, man. Well, that's pretty awesome. Did we did we miss anything? Did we sh sh do you have anything else that you know you would wanna cover or you know, any kind of thoughts before we kind of let you know before we leave?

Tyree Taylor (31:05.633)
Dude, I had a wreck last year, back in August.

I was on my way to the hot triart race. This this was about

four fifty ish in the morning. I was leaving the house and was going through the stoplight like barely five minutes from from the house and well this intersection I say green light bruh. The light was so green and I just remember barely getting like past the intersection and just

Being smacked. Like all you can hear is this big pop. And

didn't I wasn't prepared for it. I didn't have time to embrace. I didn't see it coming. I didn't know what happened. So I blacked out. there was a time in there to where I remember waking up and seeing glass like in my, you know, in my lap and the car was smoking and

Tyree Taylor (32:24.073)
I remember vaguely kinda blacking out again and then waking back up trying to like climb over the seat into the passenger side and kinda push myself out the car and blacked out again. Remember waking up in the ambulance, you know, talking to the paramedics and everything and

I called some people. Like I was on the way to pick somebody up and I called them. Like, yo, I ain't gonna be able to make it to the race. I'm just gonna drink or whatever, you know, like the race was still on my mind. Like I was still trying to kind of figure out ways, all right, like, am I gonna still be able to race? Or like it's just I didn't get there. No, I get there. I didn't get there, man.

Chris Detzel (33:01.091)
Yeah, of course. Can I still get there? Were you okay or what?

Chris Detzel (33:10.125)
Were you okay, or was it?

Tyree Taylor (33:13.012)
It was pretty bad, bro. I kind of like after the wreck I kind of

Minimize the situation. Like, it wasn't that bad, or it could have been worse. It it could have been worse for sure. But man, I left with like I had a punctured lung, dude. I had two fractured ribs. I still got a little abrasion right here. I don't know if you can see that on my forehead from it. And man, that was that was that was something crazy.

Something crazy, like to even just be.

Put down for that long. That was the first time I ever just had to sit and like let time do its thing. You know what I mean? For weeks. Like I could barely walk, brother. I couldn't hear out of my left side of my ear for a week and a half. Like I didn't even think I was gonna get my hearing back, you know?

Chris Detzel (34:15.555)
Crazy.

Tyree Taylor (34:16.646)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, that was that was a tough time for sure. I don't know if you knew about that.

Chris Detzel (34:22.733)
I did not. I I mean look, that you even overcame that is pretty remarkable. And look where you are today. You're about to run a marathon and hopefully get under three hours. You know, even if you don't, it doesn't matter. There's always more races. But dude, you might I'm looking forward to seeing how you do. And thank you for telling that story. I appreciate

Tyree Taylor (34:30.951)
Yeah.

Tyree Taylor (34:37.895)
Yeah, for sure.

Tyree Taylor (34:45.2)
Yeah, man, and and just one of those things that it taught me, you know, just to never take life for granted. So ever since then, I've just been going hard, you know, in everything that I do, man, in my relationships and running w you know, with people that's around me, man. Just not taking them for granted and taking every little seconds to have gratitude because, you know, you never may know when it's your last day here and

Tyree Taylor (35:17.266)
Just making sure you love on your people and love what you do. So yeah, I was just gonna have to share that if anybody did know.

Chris Detzel (35:18.777)
Hundred percent.

Chris Detzel (35:28.759)

Chris Detzel
Chris Detzel is the passionate host and creator of "DFW Running Talk," the premier podcast dedicated to showcasing the vibrant running community across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Since launching the show in October 2024, Chris has established himself as a central voice in North Texas running culture, conducting in-depth conversations with elite athletes, coaches, race directors, and inspiring everyday runners who define the region's diverse running scene. As both interviewer and active participant in the DFW running community, Chris brings an authentic perspective shaped by years of personal running experience. While he describes himself as primarily a half marathon runner rather than a marathoner - citing the extensive training commitment and unpredictability of marathon race day - his deep knowledge of running culture spans the full spectrum from 5Ks to ultramarathons. His preference for half marathons stems from their balance of challenge and accessibility, allowing him to race monthly without the intensive training demands of longer distances. Chris's connection to elite running runs through his family - his wife Lea Ivy is an accomplished marathoner who has completed the Boston Marathon 12 times consecutively, achieving a personal best of 3:14 at age 45. This personal connection to high-level competition, combined with his own running journey, gives Chris unique insight into both the elite and recreational sides of the sport. He often travels to Boston to support Lea's racing and has become part of the broader running community that gathers around major events like the Boston Marathon. Through DFW Running Talk, Chris has created more than just a podcast - he's built a platform that celebrates the depth and diversity of North Texas running talent. His interviews reveal the stories behind local legends, from sub-3:00 marathoners to innovative coaches, from race directors creating memorable experiences to everyday runners achieving extraordinary personal transformations. The show has featured conversations with accomplished athletes like Shantel Cloud (sub-3:00 marathoner), Travis Dowd (Dallas Marathon winner), and Mimi Smith (Olympic Trials competitor), alongside community builders and running industry professionals. What sets Chris apart as a host is his ability to connect with guests on multiple levels - as a fellow runner who understands training cycles and race strategy, as a community member invested in the local running scene, and as a skilled interviewer who draws out both technical insights and personal stories. His approach prioritizes authentic conversation over surface-level inspiration, resulting in episodes that offer genuine value to runners of all levels. Based in the Dallas area, Chris continues to grow DFW Running Talk's reach across multiple platforms including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, and YouTube, while maintaining strong connections to local running organizations like Dallas Running Club and participating in the broader Texas running community. His work documents and celebrates a running culture that he believes is "way more badass than it has any right to be."
